CORDIS HOTELS AND RESORTS UNVEILS TRAVELLING EXHIBITION THE COLOURS OF TRAVEL

FEATURING ORIGINAL WORKS MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS, THE EXHIBITION COMMEMORATES

CORDIS’ FIFTH ANNIVERSARY AS WELL AS ITS COMMITMENT TO ART AND SUSTAINABILITY

(Hong Kong, 15 October 2020) – Cordis Hotels and Resorts, a collection of timeless five-star hotels, continues its fifth anniversary celebration with The Colours of Travel, an Art in Residence touring exhibition. Opening on 16 October 2020 at Cordis, Shanghai, Hongqiao, the exhibition is part of Cordis Hotels’ months-long campaign that commemorates the young luxury brand’s inauguration in Hong Kong on 26 August 2015. Amplifying Cordis’ commitment to art, sustainability and nurturing young talents, the exhibition will subsequently travel to Cordis Hotels in Beijing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Hong Kong and Auckland.

The Colours of Travel will showcase seven pieces of innovative work, a result of Cordis’ collaboration with mainland Chinese singer Huang Yali as well as the Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation of Donghua University, internationally recognised for its fashion design and textile curriculum. Borrowing the concept of Huang’s ongoing upcycling initiative Light On Sustainability Project, the collaboration sees Huang and students of Donghua University breathe new life into textile waste from Cordis – including linen, bedsheets, towels, uniforms, slippers, etc – to create a total of four stunning artworks and three original fashion creations.

“We are delighted to partner Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation, Donghua as well as singer Huang Yali for this meaningful exhibition. Art, fashion, travel and sustainability are all at the heart of what we stand for at Cordis Hotels, and we are pleased to be able to marry and present these core aspects in The Colours of Travel,” says Stefan Leser, chief executive officer of Langham Hospitality Group. “In commemorating Cordis’ fifth anniversary, we reinforce Cordis as the approachable luxury hotel brand that delivers authentic local experiences and cares for our communities and environment.”

For their works in The Colours of Travel, the students took inspiration from Cordis’ six destinations. Identifying distinctive local features in each city, they incorporated these unique elements in their art and fashion designs: Shanghai and Auckland’s iconic towers, sails and blue harbour hues were depicted in the design of the dress and artwork; the works representing Hong Kong and Beijing showcase the cities’ traditional and popular colour; whilst the beautiful natural environment and traditional crafts are presented in the works inspired by Ningbo and Hangzhou.

Titled 留心 Stay in Cordis, Huang’s work includes a larger-than-life plastic bag that was created from melting and remoulding discarded plastic bottles and packaging. Containing mementos from Cordis, Shanghai, Hongqiao’s key milestones – including hard hats and invitations to the hotel’s grand opening in 2017 – the work showcases Cordis Hotels’ significant memories whilst presenting new life that recycling brings.

Cordis’ has also partnered Juneyao Air to take The Colours of Travel to the skies. As part of Juneyao Air’s meal cart art festival, the students’ innovative designs will also adorn the airline’s meal carts, which will be on board the aircrafts as well as exhibited at the Bund Finance Center.

The Colours of Travel opens at Cordis, Shanghai, Hongqiao on 16 October 2020 and will run until 13 November 2020. Please follow us on WeChat (ID: CordisHotels) for more information.
